One Armed Bandit
JAGA JAZZIST presents One Armed Bandit
(Ninja Tune)

*Going for Top 200 Adds*
This is the 6th album from 9-piece Norwegian band Jaga Jazzist. Taking influence from the afro-beat stylings of Fela Kuti and funneled through Jaga’s own Wagner-Esque fanfares and arpeggios, this Wagner/Kuti sound became a kind of theme of the album.

Measure
FIELD MUSIC presents Field Music (Measure)
(Memphis Industries)

*Going for Top 200*
Following a three year hiatus Sunderland’s Field Music return with a new album of artful English pop – a gloriously rich LP that entwines the brother’s renewed love of the rock music cannon with a rediscovery of some of pop’s overlooked adventurers.

It Was Easy
TITLE TRACKS presents It Was Easy
(Ernest Jenning Record Co.)

*Going for Top 200*
After years spent in the D.C. post-hardcore scene and one part of Q And Not U, John Davis decided it was time to do things his own way. It Was Easy is the debut full-length from Title Tracks, John’s first solo effort entirely arranged and recorded by the man himself.

Softcore
MY ROBOT FRIEND presents Soft-Core
(Double Feature)

*Going for Top 200*
Comparable to Her Space Holiday and Hot Chip, My Robot Friend’s music is soft and intricately composed with incredibly catchy rhythms, blending pop aesthetics with minimalist electronic stylings.

Been Meaning To Tell You
ERNEST GONZALEZ presents Been Meaning To Tell You
(FoF Music)

*Going for Top 200 & RPM*
Friends of Friends Music ventures deeper into the beautifully textured world of Ernest Gonzales with his new LP Been Meaning to Tell You where psychedelic riffs and acoustic guitars alike haunt the album’s 13 tracks. Check out BeenMeaningToTellYou.com to find out more about this unique project which includes a book of original art.

Divider imageGoing For Adds 2/1-2/2: Gigi, Toro Y Moi, Nocando, Fan Death!

Maintenant
GIGI
Maintenant
(Tomlab)

*Going for Top 200 Adds*
Capturing the spirit of the pop music of the early 60’s, Maintenant has a reverent eye on the past and the songs aren’t content to be throwback-y pastiches, but an attempt at working within a specific, rich tradition of pop music production. Features singing contributions from artists such as Owen Pallett (Final Fantasy), Mirah, Zac Pennington (Parenthetical Girls), Katie Eastburn (Young People) Rose Melberg and Karl Blau.

toroymoi
TORO Y MOI
Causers of This
(Carpark Records)

*Going for Top 200*
The power of Toro Y Moi’s funky synth and guitar play, pumping digital rhythms and gorgeously bright vocal harmonies makes for a formidable combination. This multi-cultural juggernaut of sound gathers up R&B, French House, Glo-Fi, Psychedelica and Post-Punk making a layered, complex debut.

Nocando
NOCANDO
Jimmy the Lock
(Alpha Pup Records)

*Going for Top 200 & Hip Hop Adds*
Nocando is an unsung hip hop heavyweight. With a witty style and open voice, Nocando’s raps are unpredictable, funny and lean towards social commentary, although this MC is just as likely to tell you about a wild night on the streets of LA as to make a point about the fallacies of the music industry.

Fan Death
FAN DEATH
A Coin For The Well EP
(Last Gang Records)

*Going for Top 200 & RPM Adds*
Incredible electro duo Dandi and Marta who created a rich tapestry of music, art, fashion and fantasy. Glamorous and dramatic, fantastical and escapist, Fan Death’s sound is constructed for all corners of the galaxy for a deeply rich listening experience.

The boys from Noid, England have been busy since landing Stateside just a week ago. The Heavy played four rambunctious shows this past week, including two as support for the HotRats — Gaz Coombes and Danny Goffey from Supergrass’ side project — and two packed headlining gigs in NY and Philly.

In addition to their live concerts, The Heavy took over the World Wide Web this past week. If you missed their performances the first time, check out The Heavy on WNYC, MTV Iggy, VIMBY, Shockhound, and LP33 TV. The band also performed live on WFUV.

What’s more, The Heavy’s ‘Sixteen’ was just featured as NPR’s Song Of The Day, check it out here.

Had that been all the band accomplished this week, that would be a feat, but no, The Heavy are not done yet. To top off their trip to the States, they’re going out with a bang and are landing on US telly nationwide tonight on The Late Show with David Letterman (Monday, January 18, 2010, 11:35pm ET/PT on CBS). The Heavy will perform the US television debut of their single “How You Like Me Now?”, off the band’s sophomore album, The House That Dirt Built, out now on Counter/+1 Records. The performance will feature special guests The Dap Kings on horns.

The Heavy now has an iPhone App that is chock-full of all things heavy, get it here for free: US, UK, and CAN.
