Daedelus‘ newest release, Righteous Fists of Harmony, will be coming out on Flying Lotus‘ outstanding Brainfeeder label. Bridging the demise of the magic-inspired martial arts fighters of the Boxer Rebellion to the post modern malady of technology and imagination, Daedelus constructs a soundtrack-of-sorts to the struggle of both 19th century China against colonialism and modern man’s inevitable hurl towards an unknown future.
After seventy years of China’s opium-related subjugation by Queen Victoria and her allies, a force of resistance fighters — termed “Boxers” by the British — rose to the challenge in 1898. Calling themselves “The Righteous Fists of Harmony,” this secret society of martial artists felt they held magical powers: they believed themselves bulletproof, able to fly, and capable of raising the dead (who would then fight alongside them). And so began the brief Boxer Rebellion; three years later 100,000 Boxers had fallen, their magic helpless against the cutting-edge machinery of war. The British prevailed only to face ultimate defeat, as their empire rapidly declined.
Daedelus endeavors to compose a requiem for the end — of beliefs, of lives, and of an era. This elegy for a bygone battle sheds light on our own contemporary conundrum: will our faith in modernity be our downfall? Are we blinded by this age of wonders, doomed to be destroyed by our ingenious inventions? Although Daedelus’ music has always juxtaposed organic and electronic elements, they war as never before on Righteous Fists of Harmony, a portrait of a tumultuous era that came crashing to a close.

Daedelus, the Victorian-clad electronic maestro who has released with labels like Ninja Tune, Mush, Plug Research, Friends of Friends, Alpha Pup, and many more with one lined up for Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder AND beginning his own Magical Properties label in 2010. Performing with his infamous Monome(unique electronic trigger), electronic music is rarely as invigerating and exciting, so don’t miss out!
Nosaj Thing is the 23 year old LA producer who took the world by storm with his stellar debut Drift on Alpha Pup. One of the most highly touted electronic acts of 2009, Nosaj has already remixed: The xx and Charlotte Gainsbourg in 2010 and looks to take his unique brand of dark, hard-hitting beats on the road!
Jogger’s experimental electronic sound is sometimes dangerous, sometimes poignant, and sometimes funny, but always captivating. This America singer songwriter duo consists of Amir Yaghmai on violin and guitar, and Jonathan Larroquette on laptop and controllers, with the vocal duties divided between them. After being named to URB’s Next 100 and releasing their debut album on Daedelus’ Magical Properties, Jogger is another LA act ready to come into their own…
The Friends of Friends label ventures into the world of Exponential Records boss Ernest Gonzales with a full-length album and art project that speaks louder than the music alone. Been Meaning to Tell You hopes to be more than merely a foray into the LP format for the label and Gonzales’s second album but rather a glimpse into eyes and ears of EG and his friends…
Been Meaning To Tell You is an album of raw emotion interpreted into sound and stands as a testament to Ernest’s wife, Devyn. From the unlikely joy of wintry bells speed-skating alongside beatboxing (“Dancing In the Snow”) to a bleeps-and-blips shuffle (“Falling Asleep to the Glow of the Television”), Gonzales’ musical vocabulary is right on, while psychedelic riffs and acoustic guitars alike haunt the album’s thirteen tracks; the songs are all linked by a well of innovative sincerity. His unique sound has received accolades from places like Pitchfork, XLR8R, RCRD LBL and he has remixed artists such as Sunny Day in Glasgow, AM Architect, Daedelus and others.
The album wouldn’t be a Friends of Friends project if it weren’t something special so EG and FoF invited a over 30 people to the mix! The final collaboration includes 16 tracks from the likes of Daedelus, CYNE, Faunts, Yppah, matthewdavid, & Copy and is accompanied by a full-color art book featuring original works from 14 visual artists. The book will be available in physical form from FoF Music as well as in the digital bundle in all formats (as a .pdf) including as a download with the 180g white vinyl released by Tall Corn Music. Preview the art book here.
On top of all the amazing contributions from friends, the Been Meaning to Tell You posse has created a website to house these creations and more. The website, www.beenmeaningtotellyou.com, tells all about the album and includes gorgeous previews of the book’s artwork, downloads, and all sorts of interactive shenanigans to entertain you while you bliss out to the music and swoon over the art.

The LA underground has many voices, some covered in grit and dirt, some slapping the asphalt, some hitting high and brassy- but none ring truer than that of Nocando. A seasoned member of the hip hop community who isn’t content to count his battle scars by the dozens, Nocando brings fresh rhymes week after week at the world-renowned club night Low End Theory where he is the resident host, as well as to a variety of steazy joints all around the West Coast.
With a witty style and open voice, Nocando’s raps are unpredictable, funny and lean towards social commentary, although this MC is just as likely to tell you about a wild night on the streets of LA as to make a point about the fallacies of the music industry. Brash and confident while also being laid back, Nocando’s lyrical delivery is an apt representative of the California attitude. Winner of the MC Battle at the 2007 Scribble Jam, the largest hip hop festival in the nation, Nocando’s mouth often seems to have a life of its own, throwing an excited energy onto any crowd he meets and providing an important connection between the music and the dance floor.
“A whole cavalcade caravan across this great continent! Magical Properties is now a touring unit as well as a label, featuring the musical musings of Nosaj Thing, Jogger, and Daedelus…
