“As Baths, Chatsworth, Calif.’s Will Wiesenfeld connects the dots between the sun-drenched haze of glo-fi torchbearers (Washed Out, Toro Y Moi) and the woozy beat math that lights the spliffs of Los Angeles’ Brainfeeder collective (Flying Lotus, the Gaslamp Killer).” Pitchfork

VOICEsVOICEs are a two-piece making warm, seductively atmospheric, mostly instrumental music from Los Angeles. Formed in June of 2008, Jenean Farris and Nico Turner, came together to break away from the musical mold they were confined to in previous projects to defy what they’ve been taught, and challenge what they know. Their use of pedals, looping, spellbinding vocals, and heartrending drumming results in hauntingly beautiful music that will awaken even your most subconscious dreams and fears. L.A. Record says “Los Angeles has one of the most exciting music scenes going on in the world right now and in the center of all this is the darling female duo, VOICEsVOICEs.”

LA Record interviews Nocando

The LA underground has many voices, some covered in grit and dirt, some slapping the asphalt, some hitting high and brassy- but none ring truer than that of Nocando. A seasoned member of the hip hop community who isn’t content to count his battle scars by the dozens, Nocando brings fresh rhymes week after week at the world-renowned club night Low End Theory where he is the resident host, as well as to a variety of steazy joints all around the West Coast.

With a witty style and open voice, Nocando’s raps are unpredictable, funny and lean towards social commentary, although this MC is just as likely to tell you about a wild night on the streets of LA as to make a point about the fallacies of the music industry. Brash and confident while also being laid back, Nocando’s lyrical delivery is an apt representative of the California attitude. Winner of the MC Battle at the 2007 Scribble Jam, the largest hip hop festival in the nation, Nocando’s mouth often seems to have a life of its own, throwing an excited energy onto any crowd he meets and providing an important connection between the music and the dance floor.

The Gaslamp Killer

The Gaslamp Killer routinely abuses the 10,000+ watt sound system as a resident floor- and fro-shaker at LA’s Low End Theory, but the good people at dB Festival turned him loose in Seattle’s Volunteer Park for a frenetic day show:

Special thanks to French Press Films.
