With its dazzling colors and magnificent arrangements, listening to Japanese singer-songwriter Shugo Tokumaru’s U.S. debut “Exit” is like being one of the tiny shards inside a kaleidoscope. Self-recorded with just the use of his Mac and a few microphones, it’s playful, xylophone-filled, and infectiously dizzying. He grew up listening to Japanese pop and Beatles cassette tapes, which is evident in his songwriting -- particularly on Button” where he enlisted a local kindergarten class to sing the chorus. Another collaboration between MC RA Scion and Sabzi (Blue Scholars), ‘Tobacco Road’ again finds Scion digging deeper than your average rapper, grounding himself historically into the rural character outlined from the lead-in sample from a Southern Baptist sermon – engaging character like none of his contemporaries can touch, Scion explores identity and race without the clichés of ‘the street’. Starfucker is originally the product of songwriter/home-recording wizard John Hodges, after 4 years of playing with NY indie band Sexton Blake. Moving back to Portland in ‘07, Hodges joined with friends Shawn Glassford and Ryan Biornstad to make effervescent pop akin to Of Montreal, Pinback and YACHT.  There are electronics balancing out twee-inflected live musicianship, and the sounds never overpower the band's potent indie pop songwriting.  It's memorable, catchy, and often brilliant.  "A fine piece of fractured, homemade pop, with handclaps, bleary synths, drum machines, clunky acoustic guitars, and honeyed lo-fi harmonies.” – Pitchfork. Cuban born, Baltimore based Lesser Gonzales is one of the most creative minds active in the Wham City Art Collective to date. His tunes are on par with the great singer-songwriters, bearing resemblance to the warm, campfire feel voice of Seu Jorge, the introspective story telling of Devendra Banhart, and flower-power folk-pop of Donovan.
