dan le sac VS Scroobius Pip
Angles
Strange Famous
* Top 200 & Hip Hop *
Sometimes a record comes along with a fresh attitude, huge hooks and style to spare – ‘Angles’, the debut LP from UK electro-rap group Dan Le Sac Vs. Scroobius Pip is absolutely one of those albums. Led by Scroobius’ witty, rubbery flow and Le Sac’s party-banger beats, ‘Angles’ kills on all fronts with amazing lyrics, production and a slew of super-memorable tracks that feel like wall-to-wall singles. Stunningly fresh and instantly enjoyable. They’re not pushing the boundaries, they’re blowing them up. We love 1-4, 7, 8, 11.
Shugo Tokumaru
Exit
Almost Gold / Startime International
* Top 200 *
With its dazzling colors and magnificent arrangements, listening to Japanese singer-songwriter Shugo Tokumaru’s U.S. debut “Exit” is like being one of the tiny shards inside a kaleidoscope. Self-recorded with just the use of his Mac and a few microphones, it’s playful, xylophone-filled, and infectiously dizzying. He grew up listening to Japanese pop and Beatles cassette tapes, which is evident in his songwriting -- particularly on Button” where he enlisted a local kindergarten class to sing the chorus. His admirers include Animal Collective, Jens Lekman, M.Ward (with whom he has shared stages since) as well as members of Grizzly Bear, Holy Fuck, and The National. Start with 1, 3, 4, 7. FCC CLEAN.
Common Market
Tobacco Road
Hyena/Massline
* Top 200 & RPM *
Another collaboration between MC RA Scion and Sabzi (Blue Scholars), ‘Tobacco Road’ again finds Scion digging deeper than your average rapper, grounding himself historically into the rural character outlined from the lead-in sample from a Southern Baptist sermon – engaging character like none of his contemporaries can touch, Scion explores identity and race without the clichés of ‘the street’. Backed by Sabzi’s original, layered beats, ‘Tobacco Road’ is another stellar LP from two of hip hop’s most promising voices. We like 2, 4, 6, 12, 16. FCC on 6, 7, 10.16. Digital Cleans.
Bart Davenport
Palaces
Antenna Farm Records
* Top 200 *
After years as a pillar of the Bay Area scene, Bart Davenport is ready to break out into the national conscience. After his self-described “studio side project” Honeycut exploded with their album ‘The Day I Turned To Glass’, Davenport’s soulful singing and ear for amazing melodies are ready for their biggest audience yet with his fourth solo LP ‘Palaces’. Raised on mod rock and steeped in the tradition of singers like Harry Nilsson and Arthur Lee while reminiscent of new-classic pop like Peter Bjorn and John and Jens Lekman. We like 2, 3, 6, 11, 12. FCC CLEAN.
Mr. Scruff
Kalimba / Give Up To Get
Ninja Tune
* Top 200 & RPM *
Andy Carthy, who answers to the name Mr Scruff and self-describes himself as “DJ, Producer, Cartoonist & Tea Drinker,” has made a name for himself under the shadow of Manchester's mid 90s club scene, cementing a legendary DJ status. “Kalimba” and “Donkey Ride” guarantee a mix of quirkiness and quality---a bit of electro, hip hop, house, and 80’s soul, and even Madness into his music. Fun facts, alongside a tour with The Herbaliser behind him, his range of specialty teas became the 5th best selling grocery product in the long and illustrious history of Selfridge’s Food Hall. Start with 1, 4.
Starfucker
Starfucker
Badman Recording Co.
* Top 200 *
Starfucker is originally the product of songwriter/home-recording wizard John Hodges, after 4 years of playing with NY indie band Sexton Blake. Moving back to Portland in ‘07, Hodges joined with friends Shawn Glassford and Ryan Biornstad to make effervescent pop akin to Of Montreal, Pinback and YACHT. There are electronics balancing out twee-inflected live musicianship, and the sounds never overpower the band's potent indie pop songwriting. It's memorable, catchy, and often brilliant. "A fine piece of fractured, homemade pop, with handclaps, bleary synths, drum machines, clunky acoustic guitars, and honeyed lo-fi harmonies.” – Pitchfork. Start with: 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 10. FCC clean. Say Star-f-er on-air.
Lesser Gonzalez Alvarez
Why Is Bear Billowing
Carpark Records
* Top 200 *
Cuban born, Baltimore based Lesser Gonzales is one of the most creative minds active in the Wham City Art Collective to date. His tunes are on par with the great singer-songwriters, bearing resemblance to the warm, campfire feel voice of Seu Jorge, the introspective story telling of Devendra Banhart, and flower-power folk-pop of Donovan. Fun fact, his website http://www.thinplastic.com is an archive of all of Lesser Gonzales’s work, including music, paintings, and short films—check out one where he’s adapted an early 90s computer game to determine the structural soundness of your name??? So rad. Start with tracks 1, 4, 8, 5, 11.
Little Teeth
Child Bearing Man
Absolutely Kosher
* Top 200 *
There’s something going on in San Francisco that is eerily reminiscent of the psychedelic explosion of the 60’s, and this time it’s weirder, wilder and still a well-kept secret of the Bay Area. The trio Little Teeth are part of the SF underground that is just now forming into something that’s getting ready to rival Portland, New York, Los Angeles…their debut LP, ‘Child Bearing Man’, couldn’t come from anywhere else, with wild vocals, exuberant chants and skeletal instrumentation recalling a deconstructed, backyard female-led Animal Collective. Amazing, hopeful songs abound, led by the unmistakable vocals of Dannie Murrie. We love 1, 2, 5, 6, 8. FCC on 4, 6, 8.
Nightmares on Wax
thought so...
Warp Records
* Top 200 & RPM *
Operating off the coast of Spain in Ibiza, George Evelyn, aka E.a.s.e., is the force behind trailblazing leftfield act Nightmares On Wax. His sixth album thought so... marks a new era in almost two decades of N.O.W. Even more than before, the N.O.W. sound reflects a trademark musical vision that combines elements of funky reggae and a European club scene melded with a soulful world beat, evocative of Screamadelica era Primal Scream. thought so... blends electronica and heavy production perfectly with his sound. The result is catchy, groove-based, and hauntingly traditional but still fresh. Start with 2, 3, 4, 9, 10. FCC CLEAN.
Michna
Magic Monday
Ghostly International
* Top 200 & RPM *
Growing up in both NY and Miami, Michna (aka Adrian Michna) offers a stunning mix of the urban and the tropical, blending electronic and wordless hip hop into a coherent whole. Having already produced for the likes of Diplo and Bonde Do Role, while also being the only artist to ever remix the mysterious Jandek, he's become a staple in the NYC club scene and his debut album, now in your hands, is filled with work of distinction and taste, getting asses on the floor in style. All Clean. Nod your head to: 1, 8, 9, 7, 11.
Cre-8
Keep Movin'
Potency Records
* Hip Hop *
From the first strains of the soul loop that open ‘Keep Movin’, it’s clear Cre-8’s new offering is aiming to engage heads, not just get them nodding. Released on his own Potency Records, ‘Keep Movin’ follows a debut record released in 2002 and a 2005 mixtape called ‘Neva On Time’. Always writing and recording, this EP is only a taste of Cre-8’s talents that serves as an introduction to an artist sure to turn heads, and build anticipation for his upcoming full-length ‘Abnormal Brainstorming’. Keep movin with 1, 3, 5. FCC CLEAN.

MP3: http://terrorbird.alphapupserver.com/music/04SexualSportswear(Donovan%20remix)1.mp3
Record Makers is proud to announce an agreement has been reached with American Apparel, which will make Sexuality available at all American Apparel locations throughout North America in an exclusive pre-release beginning July 22nd (full release to follow in October). This is the first time in the history of the Los Angeles based clothier that music will be sold at store level, whilst marking the first foray of the Parisian indie-label Record Makers (founded in 2000 by Marc Teissier du Cros and Stéphane Elfassi) into the world of clothing retail.
This unique collaboration began with a special pre-release of the album at the retailer's German locations, before expanding to the rest of Europe and now North America. Sexuality will be available on CD and vinyl LP formats alongside the new single Divine (7" and 12" versions) in store and online at www.americanapparel.net. To promote Sexual Sportswear, the album's first single, American Apparel created two exclusive garments - the SexualiT and SexualiTank - which will be in stores for a limited time only.
Sebastien Tellier, essential music pioneer, and the unique voice of modern French electronic-edged pop, returns with a seminal new studio album Sexuality. Produced by Guy Manuel De Homem-Christo - astonishingly the first full artist project that he has produced outside of Daft Punk - this album is Tellier's musical statement of intent for lovemaking:
emotional, hypnotic and oozing with sensuality, a perfect fit for American Apparel.
Viva Radio, American Apparel's in-house radio station, will be showcasing Sebastien Tellier content throughout, programming tracks for in-store play and offering album preview streams online. In addition, Sebastien will be contributing select content for the Viva Radio airwaves in-store and online.
Sexuality and the accompanying singles, Sexual Sportswear and Divine, have been released already in Europe receiving critical acclaim from the likes of NME, The Times, The Observer, Mixmag, Pitchfork and VICE Magazine. Divine also made history as the first English-language song in 55 years to represent France at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2008.
