On their 2nd LP, Takka Takka enlist Sean Greenhalgh of former tourmates Clap Your Hands Say Yeah for a layered, full sophomore disc full of guitar swells, multitracked vocals and artful writing reminiscent of David Byrne with the seething sophistication of later Fugazi. Featuring guest performances by members of the National, CYHSY and Bell, this is another talented New York band taking a big step forward creatively and turning out a beautiful, hypnotic album. From Oakland, CA to Portland, OR, oddball cacophonous art rock outfit Experimental Dental School’s third release Jane Doe Loves Me is reminiscent of Captain Beefheart, Man Man, and Deerhoof (Deerhoof 's Greg Saunier actually mixed and mastered Jane Doe Loves Me). The tunes are schizophrenic, with tons of Ryan’s fractured rhythms and beats layered with horns, Shoko’s Casio riffs, creaks, and laser beams.  The songs take spastic turns from carnivalesque waltzes to Jesse’s prog-rock guitar scaling. Making their Absolutely Kosher debut, eerie high-pitched vocals, beautiful spacey ambience, and glitchy, tribal drums all come together with six young musicians from Calgary on their first full-length.  Featuring two members from co-city band Women, Azeda Booth falls into a similar listen (and a crazy headphone listen, try it! It’s a trip…) as Sigur Ros, Fourtet, and Múm. Riding on the energy of a hungry, restless MC and a live band driven by guitar, turntable and potent beats, High Decibels are reminiscent of late-80’s Delicious Vinyl 12”s and a sped-up Too Short, coming straight from the heart of Oakland to your radio.  After years of earning his reputation as one of the Bay’s best slam poets, frontman Duke Johnson got together with guitarist KC Booker and formed the High Decibels, a live hip hop band that keep things simple, fresh and endlessly catchy.  We like all tracks.  FCC clean.

After moving from Chicago to Brooklyn, David Vandervelde’s second effort is filled with isolated, sun-drenched classic folk-rock. Waiting for the Sunrise is full of sweet 60s & 70s California pop songs and handsomely high-pitched ballads, sliding effortlessly between hazy rock shuffles that open songs on the record, and warm synth harmonies. Fans of T.Rex, Dr. Dog, and Wilco (ex-member Jay Bennett co-writes a song on the album) take note, Vandervelde has extended himself musically and emotionally, creating an album that is from start to finish a complete joy to listen to. From the Montana-based producer/MC Nat Kendall (Eightrack Mind), 'Songbird Sing' is Kendall's second collaboration in his 'Presents' series, this time teaming up with soul singer Paige Rasmussen for an album of song-driven contemporary hip hop that focuses both on sweet acoustic melody and MPC bounce.  Kendall's laid-back flow and Rasmussen's sweet vocals work together in unexpected ways, and the tag-team works magic over 12 tracks on 'Songbird Sing'.  We like 1, 2, 7, 9.

We Are Free has been pumping out gems lately, and after unveiling Yeasayer and Indian Jewelry they reveal four young freak-rockers from Baltimore. The undulating, high-pitched voice of singer Molly provides structure to the authoritative drum crashes and eclectic, convulsive guitar. Somewhere between Deerhoof and Ecstatic Sunshine, 'Ice Cream Spiritual' was recorded in under ten hours. The album (Ponytail's 1st) is draining and euphoric and hints at their intense onstage performances. FCC Clean. We all scream! for 1, 4, 6, 2.
